Chapter 3 - Why fewer pieces make more sense

Why Small, Intentional, and One‑of‑a‑Kind

Designing a collection for Anna Johanna is a slow, thoughtful process. Each season, I make deliberate choices about what I create, why I create it, and how the pieces come together as a cohesive story. My collections stay small on purpose. Rooted in craftsmanship, sustainability, and my belief that less is more when it comes to what we choose to own.

Designwise, I’m the opposite of minimal: I love quirky shapes, playful details, bold colour, and unexpected materials. That balance of fewer items, but creatively rich ones, defines my work.

Built From Deadstock, Color, and Character

A big part of what makes my collections unique is the materials I choose. I search for deadstock fabrics from high‑end fashion houses in Italy, Belgium and France. These are surplus textiles of good quality that would otherwise go unused after a season. Because of their limited availability, each fabric brings its own story and limitations, which often lead to one‑of‑a‑kind or very small‑batch pieces.

Deadstock also gives me room to experiment. The textures, colors, and prints inspire designs that feel vibrant, expressive, and slightly offbeat in the best way. I love creating garments that stand out, pieces that let people express their personality with confidence.

Why My Collections Are Small

There are three main reasons why I intentionally keep my collections limited:

  1. Everything is handmade
Each piece is crafted by me, in my studio. That takes time. Time I value, because it ensures quality, care, and precision in every stitch.

  2. I believe in curated wardrobes
I design for people who choose fewer pieces, but better ones. Garments you invest in, wear often, care for, and keep. No mass production, no seasonal excess, just thoughtful design that lasts.

  3. Deadstock is inherently limited
Sometimes a fabric roll gives me enough material for a handful of garments; sometimes just one. When a fabric is gone, it's gone. This natural restriction keeps the collection honest and truly unique.

Craftsmanship at the Core

Careful making is central to everything I design. The techniques I use; pattern craftsmanship, considered finishing, thoughtful construction, contribute directly to the quality of each piece. Craftsmanship isn’t just about skill; it’s about intention. It’s about understanding how a garment should move, feel, and live with the person wearing it.

Fashion With Personality

Wearing annajohanna is not about blending in. It’s about choosing pieces with character, creativity, and meaning. I create garments for people who love color, individuality, and playful design. People who appreciate fashion that stands apart from the fast and the mass‑produced.

My collections may be small, but each piece carries a story. A story of materials, craft, creativity, and conscious choices.

In my next blog I'll tell more about my business, types of clients I want to reach and how I design for them.
